This first-reading course in ancient Greek is devoted to the “father of history” Herodotus of Halicarnassus. Class time will include translating passages from Herodotus’ Persian Wars to build fluency in reading Greek, exploring issues of Herodotean scholarship (e.g. narrative technique, ethnographic writing, veracity in reporting), and to gaining perspective of the Greek speaking world of the 5^th century BCE and the conflict between East and West. As a first-reading course, there will also be an extensive review of grammar and syntax.
