Global Germany: Risks and Rewards
Germany is regarded as the dominant force in European politics and finance and it has taken a unique leadership role in the current refugee crisis. Since its reunification in 1989, Germany has emerged as a global player sharing the risks and rewards of an interconnected world. In this course, we will study how German-speaking artists, authors and filmmakers are interpreting the particular challenges Germany faces today. We will look at the history of migration, discuss ideals of tolerance and hospitality, and conclude with an analysis of the different responses to the ongoing refugee crisis. To this end, we will use a variety of texts and media such as short stories, articles, interviews, and films. Students are expected to take a midterm and a final and write three short papers.
