Magic in the Middle Ages. This course talks about witches, heretics, inquisitors, the Holy Grail, alchemy, miracles and relics. In this course we’ll look at magic from as a cultural phenomenon. We’ll explore the possibilities of the supernatural by focusing on the beliefs and practices of peoples within the Iberian peninsula. We’ll focus on popular magic and learned magic (alchemy, geomancy and necromancy), legends and miracle texts. The course studies the ideas of magic, witchcraft, and necromancy, and illustrates how the prevailing attitudes toward each served to marginalize a variety of oppressed groups within the Castilian middle ages
