Romeo, a lovelorn Roman musician in his 40s with 20 years since his only hit, consults a fortuneteller who predicts he’ll find love and money with a foreign singer named for a flower. Romeo meets Marguerite (Andréa Ferréol), an older singer in Brussels who performs Jacques Brel songs. He accompanies her on the piano in smoky clubs, thinking she is the woman from the prediction. Romeo soon crosses paths with Iris (Claudia Gerini), a 25-year-old free-spirited waitress, poet, and singer. She writes her own poetry and leads a fast-paced personal life. Romeo sets Iris’s poetry to music, and the two form a musical act. He moves into her apartment and covers all the bills while agreeing to a strict “no-sex” business pact, though he secretly falls deeply in love with her. Their musical partnership becomes a sensation, and Iris eventually catches the eye of executives, landing a major recording contract. However, Romeo is left out of the deal. To soften the blow of his exclusion, Iris breaks their strict agreement, complicating their personal and professional dynamic.
