Moravia achieved fame in 1929, when, at age 22, he published Time of Indifference, the book considered by many to be the first existentialist novel. In this interview, Italy’s leading contemporary novelist looks back over his career, discussing his experience with Fascism and the special concern with women that is the hallmark of his writing. Film director Bernardo Bertolucci makes contributions, and specially dramatized readings from Moravia’s work, notably his recent 1934, are also included.
