The plot is set in Tang dynasty and concerns a slave-dancer who is taken to Persia by a rich merchant of that country to escape an evil magistrate. The ending sees the magistrate punished and happy relations established between Persia and China. What is distinctive about the piece is that the costumes and many of the dance movements derive from postures shown in Tang-dynasty wall paintings in the Dunhuang caves in Gansu Province.
